How free SSL works on OrbixPanel
Every site on OrbixPanel can have a free, trusted SSL certificate from Let’s Encrypt — issued automatically and renewed before it expires. Here’s what’s actually happening.
The process
- You add a domain and request SSL (or it happens when you create the site, if DNS already points at the server).
- OrbixPanel checks that your domain resolves to this server over public DNS.
- Let’s Encrypt validates control of the domain over HTTP (port 80).
- A certificate is issued and nginx starts serving your site over HTTPS.
http://is redirected tohttps://.
What you need for it to work
- The domain’s A record points at your server → Point your domain.
- Port 80 is open so Let’s Encrypt can validate → firewall.
If DNS isn’t ready at install time, SSL is simply skipped — you re-request it once the domain resolves.
Auto-renewal
Let’s Encrypt certificates last 90 days. OrbixPanel runs a renewal timer that renews them automatically well before expiry — you don’t have to do anything. As long as the domain keeps pointing at your server and port 80 stays open, renewal is hands-off.
When to use a different certificate
Let’s Encrypt covers the vast majority of sites. For a wildcard, EV, or a corporate/purchased certificate, upload your own instead → Install a custom SSL certificate.
Troubleshooting
- Won’t issue? → SSL won’t issue
- Browser warnings after it’s live? → Fix SSL errors
