What is a web server?

“Web server” means two related things, and it helps to keep them straight:

  1. The software — a program like nginx or Apache that listens for web requests and sends back pages.
  2. The machine — the physical or virtual computer that software runs on (people also call this “a server”).

When someone says “nginx is your web server,” they mean the software; when they say “my server is slow,” they usually mean the machine.

What the web-server software does

Every time someone visits your site, the web server:

  1. Receives the request for a URL.
  2. Decides how to answer it:
    • A static file (HTML, image, CSS)? It sends the file directly — fast.
    • A dynamic page (PHP, or an app)? It hands the request to the right program (php-fpm, or your Node/Python/Go app) and returns what that produces.
  3. Handles HTTPS — terminating the TLS certificate so traffic is encrypted.
  4. Routes by domain — one server can host many sites, serving the right one for each domain name (via “virtual hosts”).

OrbixPanel uses nginx, and also acts as a reverse proxy — forwarding requests to your app processes behind the scenes.

How the pieces fit together

A typical dynamic site has several parts working together:

visitor → web server (nginx) → app (PHP / Node / Python) → database (MySQL / Postgres)
↘ static files served directly
  • nginx takes the request and serves files or proxies to your app.
  • Your app runs the logic.
  • The database stores the data.
  • DNS got the visitor to this server in the first place.

You don’t manage nginx by hand

Configuring nginx, PHP, and virtual hosts by hand is fiddly and error-prone. A control panel sets all of it up for you when you create a website — you get the power of nginx without editing its config.

Running OrbixPanel? It configures nginx, PHP, and reverse proxying for every site automatically. OrbixPanel.com → — the free, self-hosted, AI-powered hosting control panel.
