Reduce churn in your hosting business

In a subscription business, churn (customers leaving) quietly caps your growth — you’re refilling a leaky bucket. Keeping customers is far cheaper than acquiring them, and small retention gains compound. Here’s where churn actually comes from and how to cut it.

Where hosting churn comes from

  1. Bad onboarding — they signed up but never got a site live, so they cancel.
  2. Downtime / slowness — the one thing hosting must get right.
  3. Slow or unhelpful support — a single bad ticket loses a customer.
  4. Billing friction — a failed card silently cancels an otherwise-happy customer.
  5. Outgrowing you quietly — they needed more and left instead of upgrading.

Fix onboarding

Get them to a live site fast. Pre-create their primary website, point them at the tenant tutorials, and follow up a few days in to make sure they’re set up.

Be reliable

Reliability is retention. Monitor resources and uptime, keep backups, and harden so you’re not firefighting hacks.

Support that keeps people

Fast first responses win loyalty — see handle support tickets. Turn repeat questions into docs and link them.

Fix billing churn (the silent killer)

A big chunk of churn is involuntary — an expired card. Reduce it:

  • Dunning — retry failed payments and email the customer before you suspend.
  • Annual plans — fewer renewals means fewer failure points and lower churn. → price your plans

Catch growth, don’t lose it

A customer hitting their limits is an upgrade, not an exit — reach out and move them up. → upsell & upgrade customers
