Set up MX records so your domain can receive email

An MX (Mail eXchanger) record tells other mail servers where to deliver email addressed to your domain. No MX record, no incoming mail.

What to set

To receive mail on your OrbixPanel server:

TypeNamePriorityValue
MX@10mail.yourdomain.com
Amail—your server’s IP

The MX points to a hostname (mail.yourdomain.com), and that hostname needs its own A record pointing to your server’s IP. Priority (10) only matters when you have multiple mail servers — lower number = tried first.

If OrbixPanel hosts your DNS, these records are managed in the panel and the mail host is typically set up for you when you add a mail domain.

Don’t forget authentication

MX gets mail in. To send mail that reaches inboxes, you also need SPF, DKIM, and DMARC — see DKIM, SPF & DMARC. Together:

  • MX — where incoming mail goes
  • SPF/DKIM/DMARC — proof your outgoing mail is legit

Verify

Terminal window
dig +short MX yourdomain.com

It should list mail.yourdomain.com with its priority. Then send a test message to an address on the domain and confirm it arrives in webmail.

Using an external mail provider instead?

If you use Google Workspace or Microsoft 365, set their MX records instead of your server’s — you can host the website on OrbixPanel and mail elsewhere.
