What is a web hosting control panel?
A web hosting control panel is a web-based dashboard for running a server without memorizing Linux commands. Instead of SSHing in and editing config files, you click buttons to create websites, databases, email accounts, and more.
What it actually does
A server is a powerful but bare machine. To host a website you normally have to install and configure a web server, databases, mail, DNS, SSL, firewalls, and keep them all updated — by hand, over SSH. A control panel wraps all of that in a UI and automates the fiddly parts.
Typical jobs a control panel handles:
- Websites — create a site, set its folder, manage its config.
- Domains & DNS — point names at your server, manage records.
- SSL — issue and renew HTTPS certificates automatically.
- Email — mailboxes, forwarders, spam protection.
- Databases — create databases and users, manage them in a GUI.
- Files — upload and edit via a browser file manager.
- Security & backups — firewall, malware scanning, scheduled backups.
Why not just use the command line?
You can — but a control panel saves time, prevents mistakes, and makes a server usable by people who aren’t sysadmins. It’s also what lets one person manage many sites (or many customers) without it becoming a full-time job.
Panels you may have heard of
cPanel and Plesk are long-standing commercial panels. OrbixPanel is a modern, self-hosted alternative that’s free to run and adds AI assistance, a reseller storefront, and multi-tenancy — see self-hosted vs managed hosting.
